Whale Report: Real time whale sightings and alerts for safer oceans

Scope of Work

Protecting whales and marine traffic with real-time alerts

Whale Report is a multi-platform Whale Sightings & Alert System designed to enhance marine conservation and maritime safety. By enabling real-time reporting, alerts, and data access for the public, commercial mariners, and researchers, it creates a centralized system for whale monitoring. The platform empowers timely conservation actions, reduces ship strikes, and fosters collaboration among stakeholders.

Frameworks

Product requirements definition, multi-platform UX design, phased MVP delivery, data-driven roadmapping

The Problem

Whale collisions are frequent and preventable

A heatmap of ship traffic.
A heatmap of ship traffic.

Shipping activity overlaps with 92% of whale habitats, yet protective measures exist in less than 7% of high-risk areas. Collisions are often fatal, and current reporting systems are fragmented, slow, and inconsistent. This lack of real-time, verified data delays intervention and conservation responses.

Key Insights

Real-time, verified information drives impact

Research shows that rapid, actionable whale sighting data can significantly reduce vessel collisions and improve marine safety. Public engagement, commercial mariner participation, and centralized data access increase the reliability of reports. A scalable, cross-platform system ensures both immediate action and long-term conservation insights.

Key Objectives

Enable real-time whale sighting reporting and alerts

Collect verified whale sightings, deliver alerts to mariners and stakeholders, provide secure access to historical and analytical data, and reduce ship strike incidents.

Solution A

Public Whale Report app for sightings submission, species identification, and historical data access

Solution B

WRAS app for commercial mariners and First Nations partners with real-time whale alerts

Solution C

Admin panel for organizations and researchers to validate reports, manage users, and track trends

Solution D

Centralized database linking sightings, alerts, and analytics for policy, research, and conservation decisions

Impact

Safer oceans through real-time whale monitoring

Whale Report enables immediate awareness of whale locations, reduces vessel collisions, and strengthens conservation efforts by centralizing verified sighting data for public, commercial, and research users.

Collision reduction

By delivering alerts to mariners in real time, the system supports route and speed adjustments, aiming to measurably decrease ship strikes in high-traffic areas.
